Archive

Every year since 1998, Seasoned Cooking has posted over a hundred articles each year. Do the math and you're looking at thousands of articles chock full of all manner of recipes, tips, and ingredient & kitchen tool focuses that help you in your culinary adventures and beyond. And while it's all searchable and there's even a clever multi-select tool to help you find the perfect recipe for your needs, sometimes we all just want to take a stroll down memory lane.

That's where this Archive comes in. Just click on any year and drill down by clicking on any month within that year. Before you know it, you'll be seeing that July 1999 had us taking a tour of Chinese cuisine and March 2013 treated us to sliders with an Irish twist! So if a little wander through the site is just your speed, we have a whole lot of paths for you to take on your journey. Enjoy!

I often turn to focaccia when I'm looking for something fun to serve with breakfast, brunch, or dinner. But when I don't have time to get yeast involved, it's time to embrace scones and, particularly for dinner, savory scones are where it's at!

When Life Hands You Lemons …

There's something so very satisfying about being able to layer items in a big pan, give it about an hour in the oven, and have dinner ready. It seems almost like cheating, but I prefer to call it finding creative ways to cook!

'Tis the perfect time of the year for a glorious brunch. And, instead of toast or muffins, contemplate how beautiful a brunch buffet will look when graced with a large platter of fresh blueberry scones drizzled with a pearly white glaze.

Weeknight Shorts: Cowboy Food

When time is running out and you need a high-flavor, low-effort meal, throw what you need into a skillet and give it some oven time. It's what I call cowboy food; dishes that get prepared in one pot or skillet and are super flavorful without requiring a lot of hands-on time.

Celebrate Spring!

It's pretty common for Easter brunch to be the meal of the day. Make yours even more festive with some elegant crepes featuring the flavors of lemon and cheesecake. Then, for a touch of whimsy and a nod to the holiday, make your own little Easter "egg" on each plate!

Weeknight Shorts: Rings

It's good to have go-to ideas for busy weeks and evenings when you would really rather not spend a lot of time thinking about what to call dinner. In that spirit, I'm sharing one of my favorite stand-by dinner ideas.

Building Dinner

Noodle bowls are like a choose-your-own-adventure dinner. Start with a few basics and keep adding to them until you've got a meal you are ready to eat. As such, they can be incredibly simple or lean to the side of complexity. It's really up to you.

Curiosity Inspired the Meal

Sometimes, a simple question like "what's linguine?" can lead to a decidedly delicious dinner that might have, without prompting, been a far less impressive meal. Here's how to teach the younger generation and make dinner an event!

Culinary Glitter

Sometimes, it might seem like the recipes I present just always come together without a hitch. Lest that be your impression, let me share a recent fiasco that involved gravity and a tin of cocoa powder. However, in the end, it is decidedly delicious and that is pretty common when it comes to kitchen adventures, no matter the path!

The Everything Cake

This is an antsy time of the year. We're all waiting for winter to be over, but it has this bad habit of just hanging on or letting spring tease us, but only for a day or two. Put all that frustration into a beautiful cake that is equally at home after dinner or at afternoon tea.

Lion or Lamb?

March is an odd time of the year. Winter is on its way out (maybe) and spring is on its way in (maybe), but we all seem super busy. Fight against some of the rush with a hearty dinner that can be made in one pot and enjoyed around the table at the end of a warm/cold day!

Breakfast Baking

I often turn to muffins and specialty breads when it comes time to flex my baking muscles for breakfast. One of my goals for 2015 is to expand that repertoire to include more variety. In that spirit, I am tackling scones and finding out how very sweet scones can be.

Salad Days?

Many think of the hottest part of summer as ideal salad days, but I also think the beginning of the end of winter is also great for salad. And I'm not talking about any old salad; I'm contemplating spicy-sweet flavors with as many textures as your heart desires. It's time to start thinking spring!

Global Cuisine United: Part Three

Sometimes, we spend a lot of time looking at our differences or finding the gaps between us. Well, when it comes to the kitchen, I've found there's a lot more commonality to celebrate than differences. Let's continue an adventure that takes a look at just a few kitchen gems that unite us by spending some time with noodles.

Savory Peanut Butter

Peanut butter is a great companion to jelly in a sandwich or a wonderful dessert ingredient, but it isn't always considered part of the savory dish team. Change that up with a spicy, crunchy chicken dish that adds an element of spicy-sweet peanut butter sauce to the mix.

Baking Afternoons

What do you do when your kids are off of school for an afternoon? Recently, I spent one baking cinnamon-raisin bread and reading a chapter book with mine. If you've not done that, consider the built-in reward awaiting you when you finish the book: a chance to discuss it over slices of warm bread slathered with butter!

Taming Round Steak

If you steer clear of round steak when choosing beef for recipes, you're missing out. Get a great recipe that will yield tender, seasoned meat for your favorite fajita dinner and you'll be singing the praises of this oft-villainized cut of beef.

More Slow Cooking Twists

People are used to using slow cookers to make soups and stews, but have you considered turning to it to make spicy, tangy orange beef? If you happen to have a rice cooker, you can have a brilliantly flavored asian treat without much in the way of hands-on time at all.
