Welcome to Seasoned Cooking and to Phil's International Flair!
One sure fire way to save money in the current economy is to grow some of your own food. Even our new president has started a garden on White House grounds. I think this is an excellent example of how we can all chip in.
This year, I've decided to install a drip irrigation system in my garden to conserve water. I've also installed weed guard to reduce evaporation and reduce the amount of weeds growing. So far this month, I've harvested several onions, lettuce, a large bag of cilantro, radishes and about 4 lbs. of snow peas. All of this is good food that I can eat and share with friends and family.
Even those without land can grow vegetables and herbs indoors. With a small pot of soil and a few coriander seeds, you can grow fresh cilantro on a windowsill. Even a porch can be a suitable growing area for lettuce, tomatoes and other salad vegetables. Give it a try and you probably won't be disappointed.
Now, on to the recipe! Be well, and good eating!
Simple Soup
- 5 large prawns, shelled
- 1 can chicken broth plus 1 can water
- A few drops of sesame oil for flavor
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 small bundle of rice noodles (about 2 oz.)
- 1 hand full of snow peas
- 1 green onion, diced
- A few sprigs of cilantro for garnish
Heat the broth plus water is a small pot over medium heat. Add salt and sesame oil. When the water begins to simmer, add the shrimp and rice noodles to the pot. Add salt and pepper to taste. When the broth begins to simmer again, add the snow peas and diced green onions. Turn off the heat and add the cilantro for garnish.
If you like, you can add a little soy sauce in place of the salt, or some sirachi sauce to spice it up a bit. Enjoy!
