”A modest garden contains, for those who know how to look and to wait, more instruction than a library."
- Henri Frederic Amiel
Welcome to the October issue of Seasoned Cooking. October marks the height of the harvest season and, as such, is a great time to enjoy the bounty of gardens. As always, we are here to help you enjoy that abundance.
We begin with a look at the ultimate in vegetarian comfort food with a special feature that takes advantage of the season’s finest pumpkins, onions and more. A splendid menu that even offers meatloaf in a vegetarian version … who says you need to be a carnivore to get the most out of comfort food? Another feature article takes a look at food trends and how comfort food fits. As we travel into fall, comfort food becomes a stronger force in our menu planning.
There’s no reason comfort food can’t fit into your morning plans as well. Look to the Ingredient SpotLight column to find an apple crisp that, unlike its cousins, is a perfect way to start the day. Loaded with apples, raisins and granola, it’s a simple way to start the day. Paired with yogurt, it’s also a healthy way!
For another decidedly healthy fruit crisp idea, look no further than the Through the Kitchen Window column. Rossana shares her special fruit crisp recipe, which is both sugar and wheat free and incredibly versatile. She serves hers with ice cream and calls it dessert, but I bet she wouldn’t tell if you opt to enjoy it in the AM too!
If the cooler weather has you wanting heartier fare while also feeling just a bit wistful about summer, then you’re in luck. Look to the Rush Hour column for a simple gazpacho recipe that takes on a decidedly autumn flavor when roasted tomatoes and garlic star in it. And then, when your cravings turn to the food of fall, look to the Kitchen Focus column with its look at roasting. Before you know it, you’ll be putting together entire meals that cook themselves in a hot oven while you have time to putter around the house. Maybe autumn really is the best season of all!
There's a lot more to enjoy in this month's issue of Seasoned Cooking -- from harvest trout to a look at a blackberry pretzel torte that pairs beautifully with cooler weather food. Enjoy and here's to a seasoned lifestyle.
